McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets: Sizes, Calories, Price & Which One to Actually Order

McDonald’s sells Chicken McNuggets in five box sizes: 4, 6, 10, 20, and 40 piece, plus a Happy Meal version. Every menu site, including McDonald’s own, will tell you what’s in each box. What none of them tell you is whether a bigger box is actually a better deal, or just a bigger bill.

We ran the numbers using McDonald’s own Nutrition Calculator to answer that. Short version: nutrition doesn’t change by size, a nugget is a nugget no matter which box it comes from. Money does change by size, but only if you finish what you order. And the sauce you pick can move your sodium more than the size you pick ever will.

Skip the manual math below and use our free Nugget Order Calculator instead. Just tell it how many people you’re feeding, whether nuggets are the main meal or a side dish, and your sauce pick, then hit calculate. It instantly works out the cheapest box combination, total calories, protein, and sodium, plus a per-person cost. Know your local store’s prices? Enter them for exact numbers instead of estimates.

Does a bigger box mean worse (or better) nutrition per nugget?

No. This is the one thing a flat nutrition table hides by listing totals instead of per-nugget rates. Here’s calories, protein, sodium, and fat per single nugget, calculated from McDonald’s own figures:

SizeCal / nuggetProtein / 100 calSodium / 100 calFat / 100 cal
4-piece42.55.3g200mg5.9g
6-piece41.75.6g200mg6.0g
10-piece41.05.6g207mg5.9g
20-piece41.55.5g205mg5.9g
40-piece41.35.6g206mg5.9g

Every column is flat within rounding error. A 40-piece box isn’t diluted, upgraded, or reformulated. It’s just more of the exact same nugget. So the size you pick should come down to how hungry you are, not any health-optimization logic. There’s no size that’s “better for you” per piece.

Since nutrition doesn’t change by size, does price?

Yes, and this is where size actually matters, with one real catch. Using typical menu pricing (McDonald’s doesn’t publish a fixed national price, so treat these as estimates; your location may vary):

SizeTypical pricePrice per nuggetPrice per gram of protein
4-piece~$3.19~$0.80~$0.35
6-piece~$4.39~$0.73~$0.31
10-piece~$5.79~$0.58~$0.25
20-piece~$7 to $10~$0.35 to $0.50~$0.15 to $0.22
40-piece~$13 to $20~$0.33 to $0.50~$0.14 to $0.22

Cost per nugget drops sharply up through the 10-piece, then flattens out. The 20-piece and 40-piece land in roughly the same per-nugget range depending on local pricing and app promos, so buying 40 isn’t automatically double the value of 20.

The catch: none of this is a saving if the extra nuggets end up in the trash. A 40-piece that’s 60% finished costs more per nugget eaten than a 10-piece finished in full. Bigger only wins when you know you, or your group, will actually eat it.

Best pick by situation

  • Eating alone, want a real meal: the 10-piece is the sweet spot. Best per-nugget cost of any single-person size, without buying food you won’t finish.
  • Feeding a group you’re confident will finish it: 20-piece or 40-piece, split by headcount. See the ordering guide below.
  • Just want a snack or side: the 4-piece is the only size that won’t leave leftovers.
  • On a tight calorie budget: size doesn’t help here, since the per-nugget rate never changes. Control it by piece count, not by which box you pick.

How many nuggets per person for group orders

There’s no official McDonald’s guidance on this, so treat it as a practical planning rule, not a nutrition fact. Six nuggets per person if they’re a side dish alongside a burger or fries. Eight to ten per person if nuggets are the entire meal. For a group of 3 eating them as a side, a 20-piece covers it. For 2 people making a full meal of it, the same box works. If nuggets are part of a bigger group order alongside burgers, fries, and drinks, our McDonald’s Lunch Menu comparison breaks down how they stack up against the rest of the menu.

The other lever: your sauce can add more sodium than your box size does

Box size is one lever. Sauce is the other, and it’s the one nobody puts next to the nuggets table. A 6-piece box is 500mg sodium on its own. Add a packet of Spicy Buffalo (520mg) and you’ve roughly doubled your sodium for what still looks like “just nuggets and a sauce.” Compare that to Honey Mustard (125mg) or Sweet ‘N Sour (160mg): same box, less than a third of the sodium hit.

If sodium is your concern, Honey Mustard or Ketchup do the least damage. If you’re not worried about sodium and just want flavor for the fewest calories, Spicy Buffalo is genuinely the lowest-calorie sauce on the list at just 30. Its cost is sodium, not calories.

Are McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets real chicken?

Yes. McDonald’s states McNuggets are made with all white meat chicken breast, with no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives added to the chicken itself. If you’re avoiding artificial additives generally, that’s the official claim to check against. It doesn’t extend to the batter or oil blend, so if you have a specific allergy or sensitivity, verify ingredients with your local restaurant rather than assuming.

Happy Meal Nuggets

The 4-piece and 6-piece Nuggets Happy Meals aren’t just “nuggets plus sides.” The fries and apple slices or drink combination changes the total meaningfully. If you’d rather build your own combo instead of the Happy Meal, the McDonald’s Value Meal page breaks down bundled pricing:

Happy MealCaloriesFat (sat)CarbsSugarProteinSodium
4pc Nuggets Happy Meal39517g (3.5g)40g14g19g510mg
6pc Nuggets Happy Meal47522g (4.5g)45g14g24g670mg

Per calorie, the 4-piece meal is slightly more protein-efficient (20.8 cal/g protein) than the 6-piece (19.8 cal/g). A small edge, not a reason on its own to pick one over the other if a growing kid needs the extra food.

FAQs

Does the box size change how healthy the nuggets are per piece?

No. Calories, protein, sodium, and fat per nugget stay essentially flat across every size, from 4-piece to 40-piece. A bigger box only means more nuggets, not a different nugget.

Are Chicken McNuggets gluten-free?

No. The batter contains wheat, which is the main allergen in McNuggets. If you’re avoiding gluten, this item doesn’t fit. Check the full McDonald’s Allergen Menu for cross-contact details on other items, and confirm with your local restaurant.

Are Chicken McNuggets a good source of protein?

Reasonably, for fast food. Every size delivers around 5.5g of protein per 100 calories, which is a decent ratio, but sodium climbs at roughly the same steady rate, so they’re not a “clean” high-protein option the way a plain grilled chicken breast would be. For how that compares across the rest of the menu, see the McDonald’s Nutrition Menu.

Which McNuggets size is the best value?

For one person, the 10-piece has the best price-per-nugget without leftovers. For a group that will actually finish the food, the 20-piece or 40-piece cost less per nugget, but only if nothing goes to waste.

What’s the lowest-sodium sauce for McNuggets?

Honey Mustard (125mg) and Ketchup (90mg) are the lowest-sodium options that still add real flavor. Spicy Buffalo (520mg) is the one to watch, it can add more sodium than the nuggets themselves.

Bottom line

Pick your size based on how hungry you actually are, not on any nutrition angle, since the nutrition per nugget never changes. If you’re eating alone, the 10-piece gives you the best cost without leftovers. If you’re feeding a group that will genuinely finish the food, go bigger, the 20-piece and 40-piece cost less per nugget, but only commit to that size if you’re confident nothing’s getting thrown away. Whichever size you land on, your sauce choice matters just as much as your size choice: Honey Mustard or Ketchup keep sodium low, while Spicy Buffalo alone can add as much sodium as the nuggets themselves.
