McDonald’s Drinks Menu: Calories, Sugar, Caffeine & What to Actually Order (2026)

McDonald’s drinks lineup covers 28 items across ten categories, and a few of the results in the official nutrition data are genuinely surprising: Large Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst® carries more added sugar than a Large Coca-Cola®, three “fruity” Refreshers quietly carry real caffeine, and the strongest protein-per-calorie ratio among these drinks isn’t a smoothie, it’s the milk jug. This guide compares every drink by calories, sugar, caffeine, sodium, and protein, so the picks below come from the numbers rather than from how a drink is marketed.

Nutrition and caffeine figures are official McDonald’s U.S. Nutrition Calculator data, checked October 30, 2026. Where the source itself contains an inconsistency (a size that breaks its own pattern, a missing line for one item that’s present for every comparable one), it’s flagged rather than smoothed over. Prices, covered in their own section below, are reference estimates compiled from third-party trackers, not an official McDonald’s price list, and are kept clearly separate from the nutrition data. Want to compare two drinks head to head? Use the Drinks Quick Compare tool right below.

What Should I Order?

A couple of findings are worth knowing before the goal-by-goal picks. Dr Pepper® is the most sugar-dense drink in this lineup, about 27g of added sugar per 100 calories, a higher ratio than any Refresher or Smoothie here. And “no coffee taste” doesn’t mean no caffeine: the three fruit Refreshers and Dirty Dr Pepper® all officially contain real caffeine, up to 75mg in a Large Refresher. Three more data quirks straight from McDonald’s own calculator are preserved rather than corrected, see Data Transparency below. For estimated prices by category, see Drink Prices further down.

Drink Prices: What to Expect in 2026 (Estimates Only)

McDonald’s doesn’t publish an official nationwide price list, so these are reference ranges from third-party trackers, which often disagree by $1 or more and sometimes even show calorie figures that don’t match McDonald’s own data. Confirm your local price in the McDonald’s app before ordering. If price is the main factor, the McDonald’s Value Menu covers the cheapest combos across the full menu.

CategorySmallMediumLarge
Fountain Sodas (Coca-Cola®, Diet Coke®, Sprite®, Dr Pepper®)~$1.19–2.19~$1.59–2.59~$1.99–3.19
Crafted Sodas (Sprite® Berry Blast, Dirty Dr Pepper®, Vanilla Swirl, Orange Dream)~$3.19–3.59~$3.39–3.89~$3.59–4.29
Refreshers (Strawberry Watermelon, Mango Pineapple, Blackberry Passion Fruit)~$3.19–3.89~$3.79–4.19~$3.99–4.49
Red Bull® Dragonberry Energizer—~$4.99 (single reported price; treat as a rough reference, not a range)—
Tea & Lemonade~$1.39–1.99~$1.79–2.59~$1.99–2.89
Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst®~$1.39–1.99~$1.79–2.59~$1.99–2.89
Minute Maid® Premium Orange Juice~$2.29–2.59~$2.59–2.89~$2.79–2.89
Frozen DrinksNo reliable dedicated price data found; likely priced close to Crafted Sodas by size, but unconfirmed
Smoothies~$3.49–4.29~$4.29–5.19~$5.19–6.19
1% Low Fat Milk Jug / Chocolate Milk Jug~$1.59–1.79 (single size)
Honest Kids® Appley Ever After®~$1.59–3.49 (single size; sources disagree by nearly $2)
DASANI® Water~$1.89–2.49 (single size)

Value note: a medium soft drink is also on McDonald’s McValue Under $3 Menu at participating restaurants — worth checking in the app if you’re ordering on a budget.

Two things worth calling out plainly rather than smoothing over: the Frozen Drinks line has no dedicated pricing found in any tracker checked for this guide, so that gap is left open rather than guessed at from the soda range. And Honest Kids®’ nearly $2 spread between trackers is wide enough that it isn’t a reliable estimate either way, it’s flagged here as a genuine disagreement between sources, not a confirmed range.

Hidden Caffeine: Not Every “No-Coffee” Drink Is Caffeine-Free

McDonald’s official calculator discloses caffeine unevenly across this menu, and the pattern itself is worth knowing before assuming a drink is caffeine-free just because it isn’t a cola or a coffee.

Drinks that officially contain real caffeine, despite not being coffee:

DrinkCaffeine
Red Bull® Dragonberry Energizer (both versions)80mg, single size
Strawberry Watermelon Refresher45mg (S) / 60mg (M) / 75mg (L)
Mango Pineapple Refresher45mg (S) / 60mg (M) / 75mg (L)
Blackberry Passion Fruit Refresher45mg (S) / 60mg (M) / 75mg (L)
Dirty Dr Pepper®25mg (S) / 40mg (M) / 55mg (L)

A Large Refresher’s 75mg is close to what a Small hot Latte carries on the McCafé menu (45mg), despite tasting like fruit punch. All three Refresher flavors share the exact same caffeine figures by size, which suggests the caffeine comes from a shared base rather than the fruit flavoring itself.

Explicitly confirmed caffeine-free: Sprite® (classic), Orange Dream with Hi-C®, Orange Dream with Fanta®, and Frozen Coca-Cola® Classic (0mg, stated directly).

Genuine gaps, not confirmed either way: regular fountain Coca-Cola®, Dr Pepper® (classic), Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst®, Sweet Tea, Unsweetened Iced Tea, Lemonade, and the Frozen Hawaiian Punch® and Frozen Fanta® Blue Raspberry all have no caffeine line at all in McDonald’s official data for this batch. That’s different from “confirmed 0mg.” Real-world Coca-Cola and Dr Pepper are caffeinated, but this specific dataset doesn’t publish a figure for either at McDonald’s, so treat those as unconfirmed rather than caffeine-free.

Added Sugar: Which Drinks Are Actually the Most Sugar-Dense?

Ranking by raw added-sugar grams rewards big sizes, so the fairer comparison is added sugar per 100 calories, using each drink’s smallest size. This surfaces a genuinely counter-intuitive result: classic fountain sodas pack in more sugar per calorie than the fruit Refreshers or Smoothies that read as the “sweeter” choice on a menu board.

Drink (smallest size)Added sugar per 100 Cal
Dr Pepper®~27.1g
Coca-Cola®~26.7g
Frozen Coca-Cola® Classic~26.7g
Frozen Fanta® Blue Raspberry~26.7g
Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst®~26.3g
Sprite® (classic)~25.7g
Frozen Hawaiian Punch®~25.0g
Sweet Tea~24.3g
Red Bull® Dragonberry Energizer~23.0g

At the other end, the least sugar-dense sweetened drinks are Reduced Sugar Vanilla Swirl with Diet Coke® (~15.3g per 100 Cal), Mango Pineapple Smoothie (~17.0g), and Blackberry Passion Fruit Refresher (~17.6g). A smoothie or Refresher can carry more total sugar in the cup simply because the cup is bigger, but calorie for calorie, a classic cola or Dr Pepper is sweeter than either.

Highest added sugar in a single order (Large sizes, ranked by % Daily Value):

  1. Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst® — 104g (208% DV)
  2. Coca-Cola® — 100g (200% DV)
  3. Dr Pepper® — 96g (192% DV)
  4. Orange Dream with Hi-C® — 91g (183% DV)
  5. Sprite® (classic) — 91g (182% DV)
  6. Orange Dream with Fanta® — 90g (179% DV)
  7. Dirty Dr Pepper® — 87g (174% DV)
  8. Sprite® Berry Blast — 83g (166% DV)

A Large Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst®, a drink positioned as a fruit juice-adjacent kids’ option, carries more added sugar than a Large Coca-Cola®. That’s the single most decision-relevant fact in this whole comparison for anyone choosing a drink by how “juice-like” it sounds rather than by the label.

Zero and Lowest-Calorie Picks

True 0-calorie options, every size: Diet Coke®, Unsweetened Iced Tea, DASANI® Water.

Lowest-calorie flavored option overall: Honest Kids® Appley Ever After®, 35 Cal, 0g added sugar, a real fruit juice drink rather than a diet soda.

Lowest-calorie way to get real caffeine: Reduced Sugar Red Bull® Dragonberry Energizer, 100 Cal for 80mg of caffeine, exactly half the calories of the regular version for the same caffeine hit.

Lowest-calorie frozen drink: a three-way tie between Frozen Hawaiian Punch®, Frozen Coca-Cola® Classic, and Frozen Fanta® Blue Raspberry, all 60 Cal at Small.

No drink in this lineup pairs 0 calories with confirmed caffeine. If that combination is the actual goal, McDonald’s McCafé menu covers it: an Americano is 0 Cal with 60mg of officially confirmed caffeine.

Protein: Milk Is the Only Real Answer

Among drinks with enough protein to matter, protein per 100 calories tells a clear story:

DrinkProtein per 100 Cal
1% Low Fat Milk Jug8.0g
Reduced Sugar Low Fat Chocolate Milk Jug6.9g
Minute Maid® Premium Orange Juice (Large)1.5g
Strawberry Banana Smoothie (Medium)1.3g
Mango Pineapple Smoothie (Medium)1.2g

The milk jugs are roughly five to six times more protein-dense than anything else on the drinks menu, smoothies included. If protein is a factor at all in the drink choice, milk is the only option here that actually delivers on it; smoothies and orange juice contribute a small amount of protein but aren’t meaningfully different from most sodas on that measure.

Data Transparency: What’s Preserved As-Is, Not Corrected

Three figures in McDonald’s own official data break the pattern of every comparable item around them. They’re reported here exactly as the calculator shows them, not smoothed into a tidier number:

  • Sweet Tea’s Medium size (130 Cal) is lower than both its Small and Large (170 Cal each). That’s not a typo we’ve corrected; it’s what the official calculator returns.
  • Minute Maid® Premium Orange Juice shows identical figures for Small and Medium (150 Cal, same full macro profile for both). Recorded as given, not assumed to be a copy-paste duplicate on McDonald’s end.
  • Strawberry Banana Smoothie (Large) lists 0g Added Sugars despite 68g of Total Sugars, breaking the pattern set by its own Small and Medium sizes, which both show added sugar in line with their total sugar. Preserved as-is.

One more figure worth a caveat rather than a correction: Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst®’s Iron content runs from 220% DV (Extra Small) up to 560% DV (Large), an unusually high iron level for a fruit drink. The number scales consistently and sensibly with size across all four sizes, so it doesn’t look like a data-entry error, but it’s high enough that it’s worth independently verifying before treating it as a nutritional selling point.

One more figure is flagged here for a different reason: Diet Coke’s sodium across sizes (10mg Extra Small, 50mg Small, 15mg Medium, 20mg Large) doesn’t rise with size, unlike every other fountain drink in these tables. It’s left exactly as published and flagged here rather than smoothed into a tidier series, since no independent per-size source could confirm a corrected sequence.

FAQ

Which McDonald’s drink has the most added sugar?

Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst® in Large size, at 104g of added sugar, 208% of the daily value. That’s higher than a Large Coca-Cola®.

Which McDonald’s drinks have zero calories?

Diet Coke®, Unsweetened Iced Tea, and DASANI® Water, at every size, per official figures.

Do McDonald’s Refreshers have caffeine?

Yes. All three flavors, Strawberry Watermelon, Mango Pineapple, and Blackberry Passion Fruit, officially list 45mg (Small) up to 75mg (Large), despite none of them being coffee-based.

Is McDonald’s Coca-Cola caffeinated?

Real-world Coca-Cola is caffeinated, but McDonald’s official nutrition data for this batch doesn’t publish a caffeine figure for regular fountain Coca-Cola®, so it’s a genuine gap in the disclosed data rather than a confirmed number either way. Frozen Coca-Cola® Classic, by contrast, is explicitly listed at 0mg.

Which McDonald’s drink has the most protein?

The 1% Low Fat Milk Jug, at 8g of protein for just 100 Cal, the best protein-per-calorie ratio among the drinks covered here.

What’s the lowest-calorie way to get real caffeine at McDonald’s, outside of coffee?

Reduced Sugar Red Bull® Dragonberry Energizer, 100 Cal for 80mg of caffeine.

Are McDonald’s smoothies healthier than a soda of the same size?

Not clearly. A Small Smoothie (190-200 Cal) carries a similar or higher sugar load than a Small soda, though it does add a little protein, fiber, and calcium that a plain soda doesn’t have.

Why does Sweet Tea’s Medium size show fewer calories than its Small and Large?

That’s how McDonald’s own nutrition calculator reports it. It’s preserved as-is in this guide rather than corrected, since there’s no way to independently confirm which number is the outlier.

The Bottom Line

There’s no single best McDonald’s drink for everyone. The right pick depends on whether calories, added sugar, caffeine, or protein matters most to you, and the numbers here show those priorities don’t always line up with how a drink is marketed: Diet Coke®, Unsweetened Iced Tea, and DASANI® Water are the only true zero-calorie picks, a fruit Refresher or Dirty Dr Pepper® is the way to get real caffeine without a coffee taste, and classic fountain sodas are more sugar-dense per calorie than the Refreshers or Smoothies that read as the sweeter option.

If sugar is the main concern, Hi-C® Orange Lavaburst® and the classic sodas deserve more caution than their kid-friendly or fruity image suggests. And if protein is part of the decision, the milk jug is the only drink in this lineup built for it. For a look at what else McDonald’s serves beyond drinks, see the full McDonald’s menu breakdown.
