McDonald’s Coffee Menu: Prices, Calories, Caffeine & the Real Lawsuit Story (2026)

McDonald’s McCafé coffee menu with 2026 prices, calories, caffeine, 100% Arabica beans, and coffee drink comparisons

McCafé has three very different layers: plain brewed coffee, milk-based espresso drinks, and Frappés. The first can give you caffeine with almost no calories, the second can climb quickly in calories and sugar once syrups are added, and the third can reach dessert-level calories. So which one should you order? This guide uses McDonald’s official nutrition and caffeine data to compare them by caffeine, calories, sugar, protein, sodium, and price, then shows the best choice for each goal.

You’ll find the full McCafé menu with calories, caffeine, sugar, and price context, plus decision-based comparisons calculated from the data, not guesses. We also cover McDonald’s 100% Arabica beans, coffee sourcing, and what really happened in the 1994 McDonald’s coffee lawsuit.

Nutrition and official caffeine figures come from McDonald’s U.S. Nutrition Calculator, checked October 30, 2026. Where McDonald’s does not provide a reliable caffeine figure, we use a clearly labeled independent estimate, or leave it out rather than guess.

Don’t want to scroll through every table to figure out your order? Skip straight to the interactive McCafé picker below, tell it what matters most to you (caffeine, calories, sugar, sodium, or protein) and it’ll pick your drink live from this exact verified data, or pit any two drinks against each other side by side.

Quick Answer

  • Zero-calorie with real caffeine: Americano (Small), 0 calories, 60mg caffeine (official figure).
  • Best caffeine efficiency: Iced Black Coffee (Small), 110mg caffeine for 5 calories, or 22mg of caffeine per calorie (official figure).
  • Most caffeine in one drink: Large Iced Coffee, 205mg (official figure), higher than any brewed hot coffee size.
  • Lowest-calorie milk drink: Iced Latte (Small), 80 calories, 5g protein.
  • Lowest sugar density among sweetened drinks: Iced French Vanilla Coffee, ~11g sugar per 100 calories.
  • The real sodium story: it’s the caramel syrup specifically, not sweetness in general, confirmed across 5 drink pairs below.
  • Price: No single nationwide price exists for any McCafé drink. Independent price trackers put brewed coffee around $1.49–2.99, flavored lattes and macchiatos around $3.19–5.39, and Frappés around $3.99–5.09, but this varies by restaurant. Check the app for your location’s actual price.
  • Beans: 100% Arabica, part of a sourcing program that includes Rainforest Alliance certification.
  • The 1994 lawsuit: real, and the coffee was served at 180-190°F by corporate policy, not a frivolous case. Full details below.

McCafé Prices: What to Expect in 2026

McDonald’s has no single nationwide McCafé price. Prices vary by restaurant, size, franchise, and ordering method, so two locations can charge differently for the same drink. Delivery prices can also be higher than ordering in-store or through the McDonald’s app.

One useful official reference is the medium Premium Roast Coffee on McDonald’s Under-$3 McValue breakfast menu at participating restaurants. That is a promotional price, not a fixed nationwide price, so it should not be treated as the standard cost. The ranges below are reference estimates from multiple independent menu trackers checked October 30, 2026, not official McDonald’s prices.

Flavored espresso drinks generally cost more than their plain counterparts, while Frappés sit toward the top of the range. For the exact price you will pay, check your local McDonald’s app or restaurant menu, since these reference ranges can differ by location.u.

Caffeine Methodology

McDonald’s publishes caffeine for most McCafé drinks in its U.S. Nutrition Calculator, but not every product or size. Official figures are labeled below; hot Premium Roast Coffee uses independent estimates because McDonald’s calculator shows an unreliable 0mg reading. Where neither source provides a reliable figure, we leave caffeine blank rather than guess.

Hot Premium Roast Coffee: McDonald’s calculator currently displays 0mg for every size, but that conflicts with the caffeine expected from brewed coffee and the confirmed caffeine values for its Iced Black Coffee counterpart. We therefore treat the 0mg entry as unreliable rather than as a true zero.

For hot Premium Roast, the independent estimates used in this guide are about 109mg (Small), 145mg (Medium), and 180mg (Large). These are the only non-official caffeine figures used in the article and should be treated as estimates, not McDonald’s measurements.

No reliable caffeine figure is published for: Americano Medium/Large, Iced Caramel Coffee Large, and Hot Chocolate Large. These are intentionally left unreported.

Caffeine Efficiency: Which Drink Gives the Most Buzz for the Fewest Calories?

Using official McDonald’s caffeine figures and calories, caffeine efficiency = caffeine ÷ calories. Higher means more caffeine for each calorie.

The clear winner is Iced Black Coffee. Its Small size delivers 22mg of caffeine per calorie, compared with less than 1mg per calorie for the other caffeinated drinks shown here. The Small Americano is the separate zero-calorie winner, with 60mg of caffeine and 0 calories, so a caffeine-per-calorie ratio does not apply.

The bigger ordering insight is that espresso drinks mostly change calories, sugar, and sodium rather than caffeine. Most Small espresso drinks provide about 45mg of caffeine, while several iced flavored versions provide 35mg. If caffeine is your priority, brewed black coffee gives you substantially more caffeine without the calorie and sugar load of milk-and-syrup drinks.

Hot Premium Roast Coffee is the exception in the data: its caffeine figures are independent estimates of about 109mg, 145mg, and 180mg by size, not official McDonald’s figures, so they are excluded from this official caffeine-efficiency ranking.

Hidden Sodium: It’s the Caramel Syrup, Not the Sweetness

Comparing the Small size across matched drink families, plain vs. caramel vs. French vanilla:

Drink familySodiumSugar
Latte (plain)90mg10g
Caramel Latte320mg34g
French Vanilla Latte90mg30g
Cappuccino (plain)75mg8g
Caramel Cappuccino290mg31g
French Vanilla Cappuccino65mg28g
Iced Latte (plain)60mg6g
Iced Caramel Latte240mg25g
Iced Coffee (plain)35mg20g
Iced Caramel Coffee210mg19g
Iced French Vanilla Coffee35mg17g

The pattern holds across all five pairs: French Vanilla adds as much or more sugar than Caramel does, with almost no change in sodium. Caramel adds 3 to 6 times the sodium every time, at similar or even lower sugar. This traces to the caramel syrup’s ingredient list (it includes sea salt and disodium phosphate), not to sweetness itself. A Frappé, despite carrying the most total sugar on the menu, stays surprisingly low in sodium (80-190mg) because the caramel or chocolate there is a drizzle on top rather than syrup mixed through the whole drink.

Sugar Density: What’s Actually Sweeter Per Calorie

Sugar grams per 100 calories, sweetened drinks only:

DrinkSugar/100cal
Caramel Cappuccino (Medium)15.0g
Caramel Cappuccino (Small)14.8g
Iced Caramel Macchiato (Medium)14.6g
Iced Caramel Latte (Medium/Large)14.6g
Caramel Macchiato (Medium)13.8g
Iced Coffee, Caramel (Large)13.6g
Caramel Latte (Small)13.6g
Mocha Latte (Small)13.5g
French Vanilla Cappuccino (Small)13.3g
Caramel Frappé12.6–12.9g
Mocha Frappé11.9–12.3g
French Vanilla Latte11.8–12.0g
Iced French Vanilla Coffee11.0–11.8g

The counter-intuitive finding: Frappés and French Vanilla drinks are less sugar-dense than Caramel Cappuccino or Caramel Macchiato, even though a Frappé carries far more total sugar (up to 84g in a Large Caramel Frappé). The Frappé’s extra cream and fat dilute its sugar concentration; the caramel espresso drinks pack more sugar into every 100 calories despite looking, on the menu board, like the “lighter” choice.

Protein Efficiency

Protein per 100 calories, meaningful drinks only (plain black/decaf coffee excluded, their 1g protein totals are too small for a percentage to mean anything):

DrinkProtein/100cal
Iced Latte (Small)6.25g
Latte (Small)5.71g
Cappuccino (Medium)5.62g
Cappuccino (Large)5.50g
Cappuccino (Small)5.45g
Iced Latte (Large)5.29g

Plain milk drinks (Latte, Iced Latte, Cappuccino) all outperform any flavored version; every syrup added dilutes the milk-to-drink ratio and lowers protein density in the same pour.

Seasonal McCafé Drinks

McDonald’s McCafé lineup changes with the seasons. The fall Caramel Apple drinks are available through November 2, 2026. From November 3, 2026, the winter lineup arrives: Cookie Butter Frappé, Cookie Butter Latte, and Cookie Butter Iced Coffee — for a limited time at participating restaurants. Nutrition and caffeine figures for the Cookie Butter drinks weren’t published yet when this page was last checked, so they’re noted here without numbers and will be tabled once official figures are out.

For the winter’s non-coffee seasonal drinks — Frosted Cranberry Splash with Sprite and Red Bull Frosted Cranberry Energizer, also from November 3 — see the drinks menu.

Mocha Frappé consistently carries more caffeine than Caramel Frappé at every size (90 vs 70mg Small, up to 145 vs 115mg Large). The chocolate/mocha base contributes its own caffeine on top of the espresso, which the caramel base doesn’t.

Coffee Beans: What’s Actually in the Cup

McDonald’s states directly that its hot McCafé coffee uses 100% Arabica beans, confirmed on McDonald’s official U.S. product pages; several product pages describe the espresso specifically as “Rainforest Alliance Certified.” Arabica is generally considered smoother and less bitter than Robusta, the cheaper bean often used in lower-cost commercial coffee. McDonald’s coffee sourcing program includes Rainforest Alliance certification: McDonald’s UK’s official page states its beans come from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Honduras, Colombia, Peru, and Brazil. The exact current certification scope for the specific US supply chain isn’t independently confirmed against a US-specific official source beyond the product-page labeling above, so treat the broader country-of-origin detail as part of McDonald’s global sourcing program rather than an item-specific US guarantee.

If coffee is part of your morning order, it’s worth pairing it against the rest of the breakfast menu rather than ordering it alone.

The Real Story Behind the McDonald’s Coffee Lawsuit

The McDonald’s coffee lawsuit was real, but the popular “someone spilled coffee and sued” version leaves out the facts that made it a serious product-liability case. Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants (1994) began after 79-year-old Stella Liebeck spilled McDonald’s coffee in her lap while sitting in a parked car in Albuquerque in February 1992.

The key issue was the temperature. McDonald’s corporate policy required coffee to be held at 180 to 190°F, hot enough to cause third-degree burns in seconds. Liebeck suffered severe burns that required hospitalization and skin grafts. At trial, McDonald’s quality assurance manager testified that the company knew the coffee could cause serious burns, and evidence showed more than 700 prior burn complaints.

The jury found McDonald’s 80% at fault and Liebeck 20% at fault. It awarded $200,000 in compensatory damages, reduced to $160,000 for her share of fault, plus $2.7 million in punitive damages. The judge later reduced the punitive award to $480,000, making the post-reduction total $640,000.

The case ended in a confidential settlement before the appeal was resolved, so the final amount Liebeck received was never made public. The location involved lowered its coffee temperature shortly after the verdict, and the case became a lasting example of why serving temperature and burn-risk warnings matter.

FAQs

Which McDonald’s coffee has the most caffeine?

Large Iced Black Coffee, at 270mg of caffeine. A Large Iced Coffee has 205mg, while hot Premium Roast is estimated at about 180mg but is not an official McDonald’s figure.

Which McDonald’s coffee is lowest in calories?

The Small Americano has 0 calories. If you want a milk-based drink, the Small Iced Latte has 80 calories and 5g of protein.

Which McDonald’s coffee gives the most caffeine for the fewest calories?

Small Iced Black Coffee, with 110mg of caffeine for 5 calories, or 22mg of caffeine per calorie. The Small Americano is the zero-calorie option, but a per-calorie ratio does not apply to a 0-calorie drink.

Which McDonald’s coffee has the least sugar per calorie?

Among sweetened drinks, Iced French Vanilla Coffee is the lowest, at about 11g of sugar per 100 calories. That is lower than the Frappé and caramel drink lines.

Why does McDonald’s caramel coffee have more sodium?

The difference comes largely from the caramel syrup, which contains sea salt and disodium phosphate. Across the matched drink pairs tested, caramel versions consistently contain about 3 to 6 times more sodium than their comparable French Vanilla or plain versions.

Does McDonald’s publish caffeine amounts?

For most McCafé drinks, yes. The U.S. Nutrition Calculator provides official caffeine figures for most espresso drinks, iced coffees, and Frappés. Hot Premium Roast currently shows an unreliable 0mg entry, so this guide uses an independent estimate instead. Some individual sizes also have no reliable figure and are left blank rather than guessed.

How much does McDonald’s coffee cost in 2026?

There is no single nationwide price. Reference ranges are about $1.49 to $2.99 for brewed coffee, $3.19 to $5.39 for flavored lattes and macchiatos, and $3.99 to $5.09 for Frappés. Actual prices vary by restaurant, so check your local McDonald’s app for the current price.

Does McDonald’s use 100% Arabica beans?

Yes. McDonald’s states that its coffee uses 100% Arabica beans. Its broader coffee sourcing program also includes Rainforest Alliance certification, although certification details can vary by market and product.

The Short Version

For zero-calorie caffeine, choose the Small Americano. For the best caffeine efficiency, Small Iced Black Coffee leads at 110mg for 5 calories. If you want milk, the Small Iced Latte is the lowest-calorie option at 80 calories, while French Vanilla is the better sweet choice if you want to avoid the much higher sodium found in caramel drinks.

McDonald’s coffee is 100% Arabica, and the 1994 lawsuit was a real product-liability case, not the simple spilled-coffee story often repeated. For allergen information, check the allergen menu, or return to the McDonald’s menu homepage for other categories.
